Hurley enjoys first PGA win
Naval Academy graduate Billy Hurley III won the Quicken Loans National for his first PGA Tour title, shooting a 2-under-par 69 in the final round at Congressional Country Club for a threestroke victory.
Hurley, 34, who served in the Navy for five years, held off multiple major champions Vijay Singh and Ernie Els and 21-yearold Jon Rahm as the 607th-ranked player in the world broke through on the Blue Course to finish at 17-under 267 in Tiger Woods’ annual tournament at Bethesda, Md.
Hurley, who grew up in Leesburg, Va., and lives in nearby Annapolis, earned $1,242,000 and qualified for the British Open. He never had finished higher than a tie for fourth in a PGA Tour event.
Singh closed with a 65. Rahm, the former Arizona State star from Spain, wrapped up his professional debut with a 70 to tie for third with Bill Haas (68) at 13 under. Els was fifth at 12 under after an eventful 72 that included five bogeys and one double. In other news: • Top-ranked Lydia Ko won the NW Arkansas Championship at Rogers, Ark., for her third LPGA Tour victory of the year, closing with a 3-under 68 for a tournament-record 17-under total and a threestroke win. The 19-yearold New Zealander has 13 career LPGA Tour victories. Morgan Pressel, tied for the lead with Ko at 14 under entering the day, had a 71 to tie for second with Candie Kung (69).
• Kirk Triplett rallied to win the inaugural American Family Insurance Championship at Madison, Wis., for his fifth PGA Tour Champions title. Triplett shot a 7-under 65 to finish at 17-under 199, two strokes ahead of Bart Bryant and Mike Goodes.
