Zein honored by US Tennis Associatio­n

Dulles tennis player Marlee Zein earned a big honor from the United States Tennis Associatio­n.

Zein was named to the first USTA Junior Leadership Team, which recognizes the nation’s best junior tennis players who exhibit leadership, sportsmans­hip and character on and off the court. She was one of 29 nationally to earn the honor and the only girl from Texas.

Zein is No. 10 in the nation and No. 1 in Texas in the USTA’s girls 16s rankings. She is ranked 32nd in the nation in doubles and ninth in singles.

In 2014 she won the USTA Texas Chuck McKinley Award for the highest nationally ranked junior playe rin Texas. In 2015 at the Texas Grand Slam she earned the sportsmans­hip award.

As a freshman at Dulles, Zein won the Region 3-6A title and advanced all the way to the Class 6A girls singles state championsh­ip match before falling in straight sets. As a sophomore last spring she did not compete in the high school postseason. Softball awards

After winning its fifth TAPPS state championsh­ip, Fort Bend Christian Academy cleaned up in postseason awards. Junior Claire McKissack, junior Danielle Sonnier and sophomore Kati Ray Brown earned all-state first team honors. Sophomore Emily Ferguson and sophomore Tessa Cantrell were named to the all-state second team. Junior Kendall Bohny and freshman Abigail Cousins earned all-district first team honors.

The Lady Eagles (23-61) did not lose to a private school all season. In the playoffs they defeated Victoria St. Joseph, San Antonio Holy Cross, Corpus Christi Incarnate Word and Dallas Christian in the playoffs. Logos Prep had a pair of baseball players earn all-state honors. Andrew Richards was named to the first team. Sammy Kuntz made the second team.
