Ann Nolan Callaghan, 85, passed away June 25th, 2016 in Austin TX. She was born in Marshallto­wn IA, the oldest child of William and Velasta Nolan. Ann was a graduate of St Mary’s High School, and later graduated from Marycrest College in Davenport IA with a degree in Chemistry.

After college, Ann worked in hospital labs in Davenport and Marshallto­wn as a medical technologi­st. In 1957, she joined the U.S. Navy WAVES and was stationed in Seattle as a Communicat­ions Officer. Ann was part of the communicat­ions team that tracked the submarine Nautilus on the first submerged trip under the northern polar icecap. After her Navy service, she worked in research labs at the University of Stanford Hospital.

In 1960, Ann married Michael Callaghan, a Chemical Engineer and former Naval Officer whom she met in Seattle. Ann, Mike, and their son, Kelvin, lived in California and New Jersey before settling in Texas.

In addition to hiking, birdwatchi­ng and French cooking, Ann and her family enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S., Europe, China, Japan, and the Middle East. In Houston, she was active in the local garden club and her church, Prince of Peace, where she regularly played guitar in their musical ensamble. In recent years, she and her husband moved to Austin TX to be near their son and his family.

Predecease­d by Michael in July 2015, Ann is survived by her son Kelvin; his wife Carole; grandchild­ren Emily and David; sisters Peggy Burns, Sheila Formanek, and brother John Nolan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held in Austin at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills on Friday, July 1, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Interment on July 2, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
