Program eases file transfers from Vista to Windows 10
Q: I have been using a Dell computer running Windows Vista and have recently bought a new Dell computer with Windows 10. What is the easiest way to transfer files, including email, to the new computer? I recall that the transfer when I went from a Windows 98 computer to Vista was not too complicated, but I don’t see any transfer instructions on Windows 10.
A: In previous versions of Windows, Microsoft offered a tool called Windows Easy Transfer, which was designed to transfer data from XP computers to a computer using Windows 7 or to transfer data from one Windows 7 computer to another.
With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft has done away with this tool. The good news is the company has partnered with LapLink to offer a program called PC Mover Express. This application will allow you to easily move documents, photos, music and user profile settings from one computer to another. Free technical support is offered as well.
If you want to be able to move your installed applications, you’ll have to pony up for the paid version. But if you have your original install disks, you shouldn’t have much of a problem installing your application on the new computer, assuming they are compatible.
You can grab PC Mover Express from pcmover free.azurewebsites.net.
Q: How do I make folders in Windows 10 mail?
A: The quick answer is you can’t. At least not using the Windows 10 mail application itself. You can, however, create folders using the web interface for your email by accessing your account with a web browser.
To make this a bit more complicated, the Windows 10 mail will, by default, show only the Inbox, Sent Items and Drafts folders in the default view. To view additional or specific folders, you will need to click on the More menu option to reveal all of your email folders. You can also rightclick an individual folder and add it to Favorites if you want quicker access.
The Windows 10 mail application is very basic. If you are looking for more features, I recommend Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird. Thunderbird has the added feature of being free, unlike Outlook.
