Mrs. Edith Adele Casanova, formerly of Houston, Texas, passed away in her daughters care in Nacogdoche­s, Texas August 5, 2016 at the age of 101. She was born April 30, 1915 in Stephenson, Mississipp­i to parents Lonnie Johnson Crum and Ethel (Baker) Crum.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 13, 2016, at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway in Houston with Curtis Barbarick officiatin­g. Pallbearer­s include Rodney Casanova, Warren Stutts, Johnny Conn, Steven Heal, Billy Shumate, Jr., Todd McCalip, and Charles McPherson. A visitation will take place prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Brookside Memorial Park.

Adele is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin D. Casanova; brothers, Herk Crum, Roy Crum, Maxie Crum; sister, AnnieB Humphreys; sons, Robert J. Casanova, Homer E. Casanova; grandson, Jason McKnight.

She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Shumate and husband Bill, Linda McKnight and husband Jimmy, Melva Casanova, Virginia McPherson; brother, Irvin Crum; grandchild­ren, Rodney Casanova, Monica McKnight Heal, Sheila McKnight, Warren Stutts, Johnny Conn, Charles McPherson, Billy Shumate, Jr., Teri McCalip; 25 great-grandchild­ren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Adele was a top student in every class throughout all her school years culminatin­g with the honor of valedictor­ian. Adele met her husband of 55 years in 1935 in Crosby, Mississipp­i. Adele was very proud of the fact that she was a stand-out high school basketball player, often surprising talented men by outplaying them! She would still occasional­ly shoot baskets into her 70’s. She attributed her longevity in life to “good country living” and always taught her kids and grandkids that manners and respect will get you far in life. Adele was active in the Second Baptist Church in Houston, serving as the Sunday school secretary. She was also the past president of The Ladies Fraternal Order of Eagles. Adele loved to travel as much as she could, taking trips to Alaska and Hawaii, amongst others. She had a particular fondness for visiting Mississipp­i. Mrs. Casanova loved her family and was often the glue that held that family together. Many family members would consider her the matriarch of the family. She loved to play jokes on her kids and grandkids. She also had a fondness for dancing, doing the Charleston dance on her 101st birthday!
