Soccer star adds sauce to the menu
Houston Dash and Team USA soccer star Carli Lloyd already has made a name for herself thanks to her on-field work.
Now, she’s carving out a space for herself on local grocery store shelves.
While other local stars such as the Texans’ J.J. Watt and Brock Osweiler and the Astros’ Carlos Correa pitch H-E-B products in commercials for the Texas grocery giant, Lloyd has her own line of hot sauce.
“Carli’s Kickin’ Hot Sauce” will be available at participating Houstonarea Kroger stores for a limited time. The sauce also can be purchased online via Pittsburgh-based PLB Sports.
The sauce, which comes in 12-ounce bottles, is “made from only the best cayenne and habanero peppers,” according to a PLB news release.
This isn’t the first time food has been named after a star Houston athlete. Here are some other instances:
J.J. Watt: The recently opened Killen’s Burgers in Pearland includes a tribute to Texans star Watt called the #99 Burger. It consists of two 10-ounce patties with Wisconsin yellow cheddar cheese and Nueske’s bacon. It’s served with a side of Wisconsin cheese curds.
Nolan Ryan: The Hall of Fame pitcher and rancher is the namesake for Nolan Ryan’s All-Natural Texas Beef, which is sold at select Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana.
Earl Campbell: The former Oilers and UT great has had his own line of sausage products for nearly 20 years.
Lance Berkman: The ex-Astros star has a baked potato named after him at Demeris Bar-B-Q in Houston. “The Big Puma Tater” is a loaded spud topped with turkey and barbecue sauce.
Jadeveon Clowney: When he was at Clemson, the Texans linebacker was the inspiration for Clowney’s Turkey Avocado wrap at Daniel Island (S.C.) Grille. Alas, the NCAA put the kibosh on using players’ names and the eatery was forced to change the name.
