Voting blocs
Regarding “Where is the respect for Latino voters?” (Page A13, Tuesday), Ruben Navarrette Jr. demonstrates what has gone wrong with the present immigration system when he states that Hillary Clinton doesn’t even have to earn the Latino vote and that it’ll be conveniently served up to her because of the fact her name isn’t “Trump.”
In other words, it appears that the author approves of pandering to groups that vote as a bloc.
The most important part of becoming an American is to be integrated and assimilated. In the past, those who wanted to become citizens did everything possible to quickly adapt by learning English and the American way of doing things. Now it appears that those coming from many countries are here for what they can gain and not to become Americans. This is leading to the balkanization of the United States with different sects speaking different languages.
Our politicians have contributed to this situation because of their love for bloc-voting groups, and they pander to them shamelessly because it is an easy way to gain power but does nothing to further the nation’s interests. Ralph Tibiletti, Spring
