Katy voted No. 1 team in 6A in AP preseason poll

Katy opens the 2016 where it’s used to being — on top.

The Tigers are the No. 1 Class 6A team in the state, according to the Associated Press preseason poll released Wednesday.

Katy won its eighth state championsh­ip over No. 2 Lake Travis last season, highlighti­ng a 16-0 campaign in the process.

Cedar Hill checks in at No. 3, Allen at No. 4 and Katy’s Week 1 opponent — Austin Westlake — rounds out the top five in 6A. Last year’s Division I champ North Shore checks in at No. 8.

Unranked but receiving votes in 6A is last year’s Class 5A Division I state champion George Ranch, The Woodlands, Friendswoo­d and Pearland.

Aledo, winners of six state titles since 1996, opens the season atop the 5A bunch. Last year’s 5A Division II state champion Cedar Park is No. 2.

As far as local 5A teams are concerned, Manvel is No. 4 in the state after a drop down from Class 6A. Foster is No. 9.

Crosby and Angleton also received votes in 5A.

Navasota is the No. 4 Class 4A team, and East Bernard is No. 10 in the Class 3A.

Bellville and Stafford also received 4A votes, as did La Marque in 3A.
