Diabetes rates have quadrupled

- Nationally recognized for excellence in diabetes care, Dr. Eswaran sees patients at Kelsey-Seybold’s Clear Lake Clinic in Webster.

Q:Why is diabetes on the rise?

A:“According to the World Health Organization, the number of adults with Type 2 diabetes has quadrupled in the last 35 years. This is related to people making unhealthy lifestyle choices,” says Meena Eswaran, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., a board-certified Family Medicine physician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “This increase is associated with improper nutrition, obesity, high blood pressure and lack of exercise. Disturbingly, we are also seeing an increase among children.”

A tale of two diabetes

“Diabetes is divided into two types,” Dr. Eswaran explains. “With Type 1, the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin, or none at all, and is present during childhood. With Type 2, the pancreas initially produces enough insulin but the system breaks down later.”

She says the first noticeable symptoms usually include increased thirst, frequent urination, headaches, blurred vison and chronic fatigue.

“Diabetes can damage blood vessels and nerves causing diseases of the eyes and kidneys and infections in the legs and feet,” she warns. “Left unmanaged, it can lead to heart attacks, strokes and a reduced life expectancy.”

Lowering your risks

Dr. Eswaran advises eating nutritious, high-fiber foods that include fresh vegetables; maintaining a healthy weight; exercising for 30 minutes most days of the week; avoiding tobacco use; and having regular physical exams.

“If you’re at risk, please see a doctor for a physical assessment that may include a blood test,” she concludes.
