HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

- Adam Coleman

Boys

Bryson Powers, Klein Collins

Notable: The senior quarterback rushed 17 times for 142 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-14 win over his former team, Cypress Woods. He also was 7 of 11 passing for 88 yards.

What coach Drew Svoboda said: “He was here before, so he was with us. His dad (inside linebackers coach Steve Powers) was on my staff for six years, before they moved back, so he was in our junior high system. He’s going to Harvard, so he remembered just about everything we told him when he was 14, so it was pretty easy to get him back in.”

Other nominees

Taye Barber, Cypress Springs: Was 7-of-17 for 225 yards and two touchdowns with an interception in a win over Conroe. He also rushed for 190 yards and three scores on 18 carries.

Nick Infante, Clements: Was 9-of-16 for 142 yards and one touchdown in a win over Rayburn — Clements’ first win in 11 games.

Jake Levrier, Episcopal: Rushed 12 times for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the Knights’ 58-0 victory over Beaumont Ozen.

Girls

Claire Jeffress, Dawson

Notable: The junior was 4-for-4 on extra points and made her only field-goal attempt in Dawson’s 31-21 win over Oak Ridge in her first varsity football game.

What coach Eric Wells said: “Having her up on the varsity, the team has rallied around her. It’s pretty awesome.”

Other nominees

Kelsey Childers, Clear Creek: Had a combined 69 assists in sweeps of Deer Park and Kingwood last week.

Brooke Clark, Oak Ridge: Had 18 kills and 14 digs in a Friday sweep of Cypress Ranch. Oak Ridge is the top-ranked team from Houston at No. 2 in the state, according to the Texas Girls’ Coaches Association.
