1B Chris Davis left in the fifth inning of Tuesday’s game against Tampa Bay with a sore left palm.

CHICAGO CUBS

RHP Hector Rondon was activated from the disabled list, and OF Albert Almora Jr. and IF Munenori Kawasaki rejoined the club from Class AAA Iowa.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX

RHP Miguel Gonzalez was activated from the DL and started Tuesday night’s game.

CINCINNATI REDS

Utility player Tony Renda, OF Steve Selsky and righthande­d reliever Josh Smith were promoted from Class AAA Louisville. Renda is in his second stint with Cincinnati.

MIAMI MARLINS

Slugger Giancarlo Stanton was reinstated from the disabled list Tuesday, barely three weeks after his season was thought to be over because of a badly strained groin. Stanton hurt his left groin trying to stretch a single into a double in what became the final out of an 8-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 13. The club originally thought the severity of the injury meant Stanton would need six weeks to recover.

• Miami recalled lefthander­s Justin Nicolino and Hunter Cervenka from Class AAA New Orleans and OF Yefri Perez from Class AAA Jacksonvil­le.

•RHP Kendry Flores was designated for assignment.

NEW YORK METS

RHP Rafael Montero was called up from Class AAA Las Vegas to start against the Reds. The team also called up OF Brandon Nimmo, IF T.J. Rivera, IF Eric Campbell, LHP Josh Edgin, RHP Erik Goeddel and IF Gavin Cecchini.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

The club set a major league record by hitting its 15th pinch-hit home run of the season when Matt Carpenter connected on a fastball from Pittsburgh’s Tony Watson.

TAMPA BAY RAYS

Hitting coach Derek Shelton was fired and replaced with Chad Mottola, the club’s minor league hitting coordinato­r.
