Travis proves too much for Bush

- Matt Young

Naveon Mitchell rushed for 182 yards and a touchdown to lead Travis to a resounding 40-14 win over Bush on Friday night at Sugar Land’s Mercer Stadium.

Bush scored first on a Justin Harper touchdown run, but then Travis struck for six straight touchdowns.

Travis quarterback Amryn Jeffrey was limited to 130 yards, but he was efficient, completing 13 of 21 passes with two touchdowns.

The win pushes Travis (6-2, 4-1 District 20-6A) into sole possession of second place behind unbeaten Ridge Point. Bush (5-3, 3-2) is now tied for third with Hightower and possibly soon with Kempner, which faces Dulles on Saturday night.

Episcopal handed first loss of the season

Episcopal, which entered the night as the No. 1 ranked team in the Houston Chronicle/VYPE Magazine weekly poll among Class 4A and other classifications, was upset by Fort Worth All Saints 44-34.

Episcopal (8-1, 4-1 SPC Class 4A) jumped out to a 14-0 lead before giving up 16 straight points to fall behind at halftime.

The Knights took a 21-16 lead early in the third quarter, but All Saints (7-2, 6-0) fought back with a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns by Trent Barron and D.Q. McKinney.

All Saints’ offense was led by Shaun Taylor, who went 17-for33 for 229 yards and a touchdown.

Episcopal’s Gavin Geib competed 16 of 28 passes for 185 yards. The Knights’ Camden Miller rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown.

New Caney stays perfect in district play

New Caney (7-1, 6-0 District 21-5A) did its part to make sure next week’s rivalry game against Porter will be a battle of district unbeatens.

New Caney’s Jordan Cooper threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eagles past Barbers Hill 42-17 at Texan Drive Stadium. Cooper’s favorite target turned out to be Eli Aiken, who had six catches for 143 yards and three scores.

Porter (6-0, 5-0) plays Humble on Saturday night before facing New Caney on Friday at Texan Drive.

Kingwood shuts out Summer Creek

Kingwood’s defense rose to the occasion to shut out Summer Creek 15-0 and deliver a key District 21-6A victory at Turner Stadium.

The win moved Kingwood (4-4, 3-2 District 21-6A) into a tie for third place in the district with a playoff berth in sight.

Summer Creek (5-2, 3-2), which lost to Atascocita last week, started the season with five consecutive victories but now has lost two in a row.

Kingwood got a 1-yard touchdown run by Aaron Finch and a pair of field goals from Charlie Sheppard to go along with a safety when Robert Amar came up with a sack in the end zone.

Friendswood QB Page injured in 3rd quarter

Friendswood quarterback Tyler Page got banged up when he dove into a pile to recover a fumble in a 41-21 win over Clear Lake at Winston Stadium.

Page left the game in the third quarter with the injury and didn’t return. The Mustangs already led 31-7 at the time of the injury, and Page already had thrown for 93 yards and a touchdown and run for 88 yards and another score.

The SMU commitment holds the Friendswood record for career rushing yards with more than 4,000 yards.

SMU receivers coach Justin Stepp was on the sidelines watching Page, who ran for 387 yards in a win over Clear Creek last week.

Justin Karam replaced Page and completed 6 of 11 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Friendswood (6-1, 4-1 24-6A) has a huge game next week against first-place Clear Springs (7-1, 5-0).

Texans’ Hopkins at New Caney game

Texans star receiver DeAndre Hopkins caused a stir when he showed up on the sidelines of the New Caney-Barbers Hill game at Texan Drive Stadium.

Hopkins was busy taking pictures with fans but was able to stick around long enough to see New Caney beat Barbers Hill 42-17.

Meaningful game for Kempner, Dulles

Saturday’s schedule is filled with several afternoon games, but one of the most interesting games is an evening kickoff when Kempner plays Dulles at 6:30 p.m. at Mercer Stadium.

While neither school is a traditional powerhouse, both have winning records and, with a victory, Kempner could move itself into a three-way tie for third place in District 20-6A. That would put Kempner in the hunt for a playoff spot, something the Cougars haven’t earned since 2006.
