5 THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND
Warning: This list of things to do includes excuses to drink either wine or margaritas. You get to make that decision. If you’re more into sober entertainment, try some Turkish flavor, random art or classical piano.
We’ve got you covered.
Houston Margarita Festival
It’s not like you need an excuse to drink margaritas, but if you do, this festival provides an entry point to happy hour. There’s also food and salsa dancing. This can’t be bad. When: Noon-10 p.m. Saturday Where: Sam Houston Park, 1000 Bagby Tickets: $25-$150; houstonmargaritafest.com
2016 Houston Wine Fest
It’s not like you need an excuse to drink wine, but if you do, this festival serves up several complementary pieces to wine time, with arts and crafts, food and live music. When: 3-10 p.m. Saturday Where: The Water Works at Buffalo Bayou Park, 105 Sabine Tickets: $10-$150; houstonwinefest.com
Houston Turkish Festival
Quick, what’s the capital of Turkey? It doesn’t matter. You don’t need to be a global geography wiz to appreciate the culture and food of this Mediterranean country. And, for the record, the capital is Ankara. When: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday Where: Jones Plaza, 600 Louisiana Tickets: $6; atahouston.org
‘12 Minutes Max’
There’s a premium in witnessing something unique and rare, and that’s what you’ll see during DiverseWorks’ “12 Minutes Max” program. Almost anything goes — from dance to music to spoken word to anything else — but nothing goes longer than 12 minutes. You could almost call it ADD theater. When: 8 p.m. Saturday Where: The MATCH, 3400 Main Tickets: Free, but reservations required; 713521-4533; diverseworks. org
Daniil Trifonov
So, Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov is a big deal in the classical world. So big that he might be one of the few “prodigies” to actual justify the use of that all too common tag. He’ll join Houston Symphony Orchestra for these engagements. When: 8 p.m. Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday Where: Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana Tickets: $24-$136; 713-224-4240, houstonsymphony.org
