Rice defeats James Madison

HARRISONBU­RG, Va. — Egor Koulechov scored 23 points and Marcus Evans added 20 to lift Rice past James Madison 94-70 in the season opener for Rice on Sunday.

Marcus Jackson’s first of his two 3-pointers in the second half extended his consecutiv­e games streak with a 3 to 26 games. He finished with 19 points and shot 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Joey McLean led James Madison (0-2) with 20 points.

TEXAS SOUTHERN 74 DELAWARE ST. 61

Dulani Robinson scored 20 points and Marvin Jones had 15 points and 21 rebounds as the Tigers took control early to beat the Hornets in Dover, Del.

Jones’ jumper tied it at 9 and sparked a 14-3 run the Tigers (1-1) used to build a 30-26 halftime lead. Artem Tavakalyan’s dunk put Texas Southern up 64-54 with 4:33 left to play and the Tigers outscored the Hornets (1-1) 13-7 down the stretch.

Women HOUSTON 83 SE LOUISIANA 80

Freshman Angela Harris had 22 points and five assists, senior Jacqueline Blake added a career-best 15 points and the Cougars defeated the Lions in the teams’ season opener at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Taylin Underwood had a game-high 31 points on 9-of-21 shooting to lead Southeaste­rn Louisiana.

TEXAS A&M 74 CENTRAL ARKANSAS 49

Danni Williams scored a career-high 25 points to lead three players in double figures, and the Aggies opened their season with a rout of the Sugar Bears in College Station. Khaalia Hillsman added 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Curtyce Knox set a career high with 11 assists for A&M.

Kaitlyn Palmer scored 24 points, and the Lady Tigers opened their season with a win over the Miners in El Paso.

TEXAS TECH 90 NORTH DAKOTA 80

Recee’ Caldwell scored a career-high 28 points as the Lady Raiders beat the Fighting Hawks in their season opener in Lubbock.
