Pets, friends, laughter: Replace loneliness with joy

-

One of the interesting things that happens when people retire and they move from the workplace to being at home is that the dynamics of their day-to-day activities and encounters with others change.

Routines are turned asunder and adapting to or beginning new routines can sometimes be challenging and lonely.

Michele Rosenthal wrote in her book, Before the World Intruded, “Your mental participation is part of what creates your experience of joy.” She suggests reading, talking and researching to stimulate yourself mentally “to sense and enlarge joy when it appears.”

Her methods also suggest that connecting to others can be a source of enormous pleasure, and “the trick is connecting with people who also experience joy.”

Residents of Parkway Place in Houston have come to realize that their own special kind of camaraderie enhances their life experience and their lifestyle at this welcoming senior living community.

Many of their activities lend themselves to pleasant interaction, plus the spacious apartments encourage neighbors to entertain in their own homes. Entertain can mean “drop by for coffee,” “join us for the big game” or “stop by on your way to dinner.”

Another “connection” point for many people is with their pets. Cats and dogs bring joy and laughter into everyday activities and may inspire interaction with others who enjoy being around small animals.

An attitude of positivity is prevalent at Parkway Place. The dedicated, compassionate staff enjoys the residents and appreciates the opportunity to assist where needed.

Myriad activities and special events make for as busy a schedule as a resident desires. Wellness, spiritual and creative classes are abundant and dining at the bistro or the main dining room often draws kudos for interesting and pleasing meals.

The 15-acre, landscaped Parkway Place campus lends itself to power walking and leisurely strolling, and is convenient to shops and galleries.
