A&M women reach SEC tourney semis

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Anriel Howard had 19 points as Texas A&M took control in the third quarter on the way to a 62-48 victory over No. 23 Missouri in the Southeaste­rn Conference Tournament on Friday night.

The Aggies (21-10) will face No. 6 Mississipp­i State — and coach Gary Blair’s former longtime assistant in the Bulldogs coach Vic Schaefer — for a spot in the SEC final on Saturday. Texas A&M reached the semifinals for the first time since winning the SEC Tournament in its debut league season four years ago.

In other SEC action, No. 5 South Carolina routed Georgia 72-48 to reach the semifinals, where the Gamecocks will face No. 20 Kentucky, a 65-55 winner over Alabama.

HOUSTON 74, CINCINNATI 61

Angela Harris scored 17 points, Jasmyne Harris added 16, and the 10thseeded Cougars upset the seventh-seeded Bearcats in the first round of the American Athletic Conference tournament in Uncasville, Conn.

Houston (12-18) will face second-seeded Temple in the quarterfin­als Saturday.

BIG 12 TOURNAMENT

Recee’ Caldwell scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter, and Texas Tech beat TCU 76-58 in the first round at Oklahoma City. The Lady Raiders (14-16) will face top-seeded Baylor in Saturday’s quarterfin­als, while TCU ended its season at 12-18.

In other action, Oklahoma State beat Kansas 79-75 and will face second-seeded Texas.

ACC TOURNAMENT

Arike Ogunbowale scored 19 points, and Manvel product Brianna Turner added 16 to help No. 3 Notre Dame beat Virginia 76-59 in the quarterfin­als at Conway, S.C. Notre Dame will face No. 14 Louisville, a 59-58 winner over No. 17 North Carolina State, in Saturday’s semifinals.

No. 13 Duke routed No. 21 Syracuse 68-46 to advance to the semifinals, where the Blue Devils will face No. 16 Miami, which upset No. 8 Florida State.

BIG TEN TOURNAMENT

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough made six 3-pointers and scored 28 points as No. 4 Maryland advanced to the semifinals with a 92-80 victory over Minnesota in Indianapol­is. The Terrapins will face Michigan State, a 7464 winner over Michigan, on Saturday.

No. 9 Ohio State routed Northweste­rn 99-68 to reach the semifinals and will meet Purdue, a 66-60 victor over Indiana.

PAC-12 TOURNAMENT

Sydney Wiese scored 26 points, and No. 6 Oregon State rolled into the semifinals with a 65-49 win over California in Seattle. The Beavers face No. 15 UCLA, a 77-68 winner over Arizona State, on Saturday.

In other quarterfin­als action, No. 10 Stanford scored the first 21 points of the game on the way to a 66-36 victory over Washington State. The Cardinal will face either No. 11 Washington or Oregon in the semifinals.

COOPER-DYKE RESIGNS

Basketball Hall of Famer Cynthia CooperDyke resigned after four years as coach at Southern California, the school announced.

The former Comets star had a 70-56 record at her alma mater. The Trojans finished off a 14-16 campaign (5-13 Pac-12) with a 71-58 loss to California in the first round of the conference tournament Thursday.

Hired in 2014, CooperDyke guided the Trojans to the Pac-12 tournament title and an NCAA tournament berth while going 22-13.

Cooper-Dyke previously coached the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and had college stints at Prairie View A&M, North Carolina-Wilmington and Texas Southern.

DYKES OUT AT ARKANSAS

Jimmy Dykes quit as Arkansas’ coach after compiling a 16-36 record against Southeaste­rn Conference foes over three seasons.

Arkansas was 43-49 under Dykes and made the NCAA Tournament only once, in his first season. The Razorbacks lost 11 in a row to end the season and finished 13-17.

Men WEST VIRGINIA 87 IOWA ST. 76

Daxter Miles Jr. tied a career high with 23 points to lead the 10th-ranked Mountainee­rs over the No. 24 Cyclones in Morgantown, W.Va.

Nathan Adrian added 16 points for West Virginia (24-7, 12-6 Big 12), which clinched the second seed in next week’s conference tournament behind topranked Kansas.

Iowa State (20-10, 12-6) can earn the third seed if No. 11 Baylor loses at Texas on Saturday.

Naz Mitrou-Long led Iowa State with 22 points.

WICHITA ST. 82 BRADLEY 56

Darral Willis Jr. scored 17 points, and Rashard Kelly added 14 as the No. 21 Shockers overpowere­d the Braves in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarterfin­als at St. Louis.

Second-seeded Wichita State (28-4) shook off a slow start to beat Bradley for the 16th straight time. Bradley, the No. 7 seed, hasn’t beaten Wichita State since Feb. 24, 2010.

Darrell Brown led Bradley with 18 points, and Antoine Pittman added 13.
