No. 1 TCU storms past No. 4 LSU

- From staff and web reports

TCU rests atop every meaningful college baseball ranking. The Horned Frogs keep proving why.

They rode a five-run second inning to a 9-6 win over the No. 4 Tigers in the nightcap of Friday’s Shriners Hospitals For Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

As soon as LSU did the talking with it bats in the first inning, TCU (8-1) flipped its switch offensively in the second via Austen Wade’s three-run homer to right field and Oak Ridge product Luken Baker’s two-run homer run to left.

That first inning was gold for the purple and gold, too. Greg Deichmann’s RBI single, Jake Slaughter’s two-RBI single and an RBI double from Jordan Romero pumped some life into the LSU half of the crowd.

After TCU’s efforts, the Tigers never saw the lead again although they plated two more runs in the ninth to alert the Horned Frogs.

TCU added a run each in the fifth and sixth innings off RBI singles from Cam Warner and Evan Skoug, respectively.

TEXAS A&M 9 TEXAS TECH 0

Brigham Hill tossed seven shutout innings to increase his seasonopening scoreless streak to 202⁄3 innings, Logan Foster went 4-for-5 with a home run, and the No. 25 Aggies routed the No. 21 Red Raiders.

Hill (3-0) struck out eight, allowing just three hits and two walks before giving way to Landon Miner, who slammed the door shut over the final two frames to complete Texas A&M’s second shutout of the season.

Joel Davis, who went 3-for-5, opened the scoring for the Aggies (9-1) with an RBI double off Red Raiders starter Davis Martin (1-1) in the first inning. Foster made it 2-0 with an RBI double in the second.

Braden Shewmake crushed a two-run blast in the third for his first homer of the season, and the Red Raiders (9-2) went quietly after that.

BAYLOR 4, MISSISSIPPI 0

Nick Lewis struck out nine over seven scoreless innings as part of a combined two-hitter, Richard Cunningham went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs, and the Bears remained unbeaten with an upset win over the 20th-ranked Rebels.

Baylor improved to 100, inching closer to the alltime best start in program history (13-0 in 1984).
