No. 1 South Carolina advances

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A’ja Wilson scored 21 points, including the put-back that gave South Carolina the lead for good and the free throws that sealed it, to help the No. 1 seed Gamecocks beat eight seed Arizona State 71-68 in the Stockon (Calif.) Regional on Sunday night.

Sophie Bruner missed a heavily contested 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied it.

South Carolina advanced to the Sweet 16 for a fourth straight year and avoided being the first No. 1 seed to lose in the second round since Michigan State beat Duke in 2009.

OREGON ST. 64, CREIGHTON 52

Sydney Wiese scored 13 points in her final career game at Gill Coliseum, and the second-seeded Beavers advanced with a win over the No. 7 seed Bluejays in the Stockton (Calif ). Regional at Corvallis, Ore.

Gabriella Hanson added 13 points for Oregon State, which reached the Sweet 16 for the second year in a row.

FLORIDA ST. 77, MISSOURI 55

Shakayla Thomas scored 20 points, and the third-seeded Seminoles advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third straight season with a victory over the No. 6 seed Tigers in the Stockton (Calif.) Regional at Tallahasse­e, Fla.

NOTRE DAME 88, PURDUE 82

Marina Mabrey scored 21 points, Arike Ogunbowale added 18, and the top-seeded Irish survived playing the second half without leading scorer Brianna Turner for an overtime win over the ninth-seeded Boilermake­rs in the Lexington (Ky.) Regional at South Bend, Ind., advancing to the Sweet 16.

Turner, a Manvel product, left with a left knee injury after landing awkwardly trying to catch a pass in the final minute of the first half.

OHIO ST. 82, KENTUCKY 68

Tori McCoy scored six straight points midway through the fourth quarter to help the fifth-seeded Buckeyes withstand a furious rally from the No. 4 seed Wildcats and escape with a win in the Lexington Regional at Lexington, Ky.

MISSISSIPP­I ST. 92, DEPAUL 71

Blair Schaefer scored 18 points and the No. 2 seed Bulldogs beat the seventh-seeded Blue Demons in the Oklahoma City Regional at Starkville, Miss., reaching the Sweet 16 for the second consecutiv­e season.

MARYLAND 83 WEST VIRGINIA 56

Destiny Slocum nailed a 70-foot shot to cap a pivotal second quarter for the thirdseede­d Terrapins, and Maryland went on to defeat the sixth-seeded Mountainee­rs in the Bridgeport (Conn.) Regional at College Park, Md.
