OBITUARY FOR RUSSELL (RUSS) TAYLOR VENABLE III
Russ was born on July 24, 1939, St. Joseph’s Infirmary. He died after a prolonged illness on March 26, 2017 in Houston. He is preceded in death by his parents Lois Virginia Tyner and Russell Taylor Venable Jr. Russ is survived by his Wife, Marylen Venable and her extended family; Daughter, Valerie Valentine; Granddaughter, Jasmine Carpenter; Sister and her husband, Nance and Ron Chapman of Dallas; and nephews Matthew and Christopher Murray and their families.
Russ and wife, Marylen, were long-time Loves meeting and dating in junior high (Pershing) and were high school sweethearts ‘Class of 57’ at Bellaire High School. Russell lettered in football at both schools.
In 1958, Russ joined the U.S. Air Force and proudly served, retiring in 1978. During his career, Russ earned numerous decorations and awards including two Meritorious Service Medals, Six Commendation Medals, several Presidential Citations and Outstanding Unit Awards.
Russ transitioned into civilian life working for Individual Development Center, later renamed Work Services Corporation and volunteering for several community organizations. His primary goal was to provide services to the mentally disabled and/or physically challenged. Russ was an easy going, kind and compassionate individual. He was loved deeply by his family, friends, and everyone he served. Russ particularly enjoyed his involvement with Special Olympics and in 2002 was presented with the first Volunteer of The Year Award. Thereafter Area 9, Texas Special Olympics named their annual award the ‘Russ Venable Volunteer of The Year Award” a legacy he was very proud to leave for us all.

Services will be held Wednesday, March 29, at 11:00am with reception to follow. St. Luke’s Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Rd, Houston, 77027.
