Political reality check

Responsibility

Regarding “Demise of GOP health care plan latest blow to Trump presidency” (Page A14, Saturday), House Speaker Paul Ryan showed grace and character in defeat. President Trump did not.

Going forward Trump can either sabotage Obamacare and force its demise, or he can act to bolster the health insurance market that many millions of Americans depend upon. It seems that he has already made his choice.

He doesn’t seem to realize that he is the president and should not be making citizens suffer to make a political point. He is responsible for the lives and liberties of Americans. It is his responsibility to prevent a crisis and not cause one. Doug Verret, Sugar Land

Power drunk

The Republicans tried to rush a bill that would eliminate Obamacare. The Democrats are thrilled that the Republicans failed. I have not heard one party leader on either side say, “We don’t need to remove Obamacare, but we do need to make changes that will benefit all Americans.”

Republicans and Democrats no longer care about their constituents. They only care which party is in power. Until our elected officials start representing the people instead of their party, we should never vote to send a congressman or senator back to Washington.

When the Americans start firing them, they will start representing us, the American people. If you vote a straight ticket, never complain. You got what you deserve. Ed Bersin, Sugar Land

Adjustments

Regarding “GOP pulls plug on repeal plan” (Page A1, Saturday), the recent defeat of the Trump administration and the Republican majority in attempting to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act is more than just a temporary setback. It is the latest in a series of failures by this president and the Congress to “make America great again.”

The results of less than 100 days in office make President Donald Trump appear incapable of leading or governing. It is also indicative of a divided Republican Congress. If a party cannot stand together and unite their own members, how can they hope to unify the country as a whole?

I hope, for the sake of our country, that these early struggles represent another case of an outsider learning the reality of Washington politics and that once he gets the feel of things, our new president will be able to overcome these early failures. G. Wayne Baggett, Friendswood
