MONTY LYNN HARRELL
1946-2017
Monty Lynn Harrell was born on October 3, 1946, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Virginia Ruth Harrell and Billy Glenn Harrell. He was an only child. His loving grandparents, GeeGee and Edgar Estill, and wonderful step father, Robert Bain, all pre-deceased him. He was in hospice care at home and died with his wife of over 40 years, Sheryl, and 4-legged furry children, Tori, the Old English Sheepdog rescue, and Christina, the rescued cat, with him.
Monty graduated as Valedictorian from Eastern Hills High School, Fort Worth, in 1964. During those years, he was a competitive roller skater and played French horn in the band. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Texas, Austin, and was a life-time fan of UT Football. He was Foundation Member and a Lifetime Texas Ex Member and had football season tickets for 25 years. After graduation from UT, he went to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he experienced a different climate and lifestyle and made lifelong friends. He earned his Masters and what he described as ABD - all but dissertation. His education was very important to him.
He was the Budget Officer for the City of Ventura, California, when he met Sheryl Herndon and they married in July 1976. His professional life included working for the Department of Revenue for the State of Wisconsin, various banks in Los Angeles, California and working as an Economist for Price, Waterhouse Coopers and the IRS involved in transfer pricing. He loved his work. He also did some intermittent teaching of Graduate Economic classes at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Woodbury College. He later taught Economics at Lone Star Montgomery Junior College.
Some of his activities included being President of the Valencia Central Valley Homeowners Association for 5 years, guest speaker at various groups around the Los Angeles area as well as being a guest on radio talk shows in Los Angeles. He was also a youth group sponsor for Junior and Senior High School kids at Saint Nicholas Episcopal Church in Encino, California. He was also proud to have worked on President Ronald Reagan’s election and was a life-long conservative.
In addition to UT football, he loved swimming, skiing, sailing, history, economics, travel (particularly cruising), animals (particularly rescue and Old English Sheepdogs), and making friends wherever he went. He also enjoyed “Happy Hour” sitting on the back patio of his home with Sheryl.
He was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas. A memorial service will take place on Monday, April 24, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home, with a reception immediately following in the event room.
He was a funny, smart and good-looking man and will be missed.
