Marlins’ no-hit bid falls short

SEATTLE — Mitch Haniger hit a one-out double off Kyle Barracloug­h in the ninth inning, ending the Miami Marlins’ bid for a combined no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Wei-Yin Chen and Brad Ziegler combined on eight hitless innings. Chen was pulled after seven, and Ziegler got three groundouts to complete the eighth.

Chen allowed three baserunner­s, two in the seventh. Haniger walked on a 3-2 pitch to open the inning, and Nelson Cruz was hit by a pitch with one out. Chen got out of the jam striking out Kyle Seager and getting Taylor Motter to pop out on his 100th pitch.

RED SOX 8, BLUE JAYS 7: Brian Johnson earned his first major league win after being called up from the minors earlier in the day, and Mookie Betts hit his first home run of the season as Boston held on at Toronto.

WHITE SOX 4, YANKEES 1: Miguel Gonzalez pitched shutout ball into the ninth to win a road start for the first time in two years, Leury Garcia and Avisail Garcia homered, and Chicago ended New York’s eight-game winning streak.

NATIONALS 3, BRAVES 1: Max Scherzer pitched two-hit ball over seven scoreless innings, and Washington handed host Atlanta its first loss at SunTrust Park.

CARDINALS 2, PIRATES 1: Dexter Fowler tripled and scored, Mike Leake pitched into the seventh inning, and host St. Louis beat Pittsburgh.

CUBS 9, BREWERS 7: Kyle Schwarber and Miguel Montero each hit a two-run homer, and Chicago rallied from five down in a win over visiting Milwaukee.

PHILLIES 6, METS 2: Cameron Rupp drove in the tiebreakin­g run with a sacrifice fly as Philadelph­ia scored four times in the 10th inning to win at New York.

REDS 9, ORIOLES 3: Adam Duvall hit his first career grand slam, and Bronson Arroyo got his first win in almost three years, helping Cincinnati beat visiting Baltimore.

RAYS 5, TIGERS 1: Matt Andriese outpitched Michael Fulmer, and host Tampa Bay beat Detroit.

INDIANS 11, TWINS 4: Jose Ramirez homered and drove in two runs to lead Cleveland to a win at Minnesota.

GIANTS 2, ROYALS 1: Joe Panik hit an RBI single with two outs in the 11th, and San Francisco won at Kansas City.
