Upton’s homer lifts Tigers

DETROIT — Justin Upton hit a game-ending three-run homer, and the Detroit Tigers overcame Justin Verlander’s groin injury to beat the Chicago White Sox 7-4 on Sunday for a sweep of their weekend series.

Nicholas Castellano­s was hit by a pitch from David Robertson (3-2), and second baseman Yolmer Sanchez then misplayed a potential double-play ball and was only able to get Miguel Cabrera at first. J.D. Martinez was intentiona­lly walked, and Upton hit his 11th homer.

CUBS 7, CARDINALS 6: Ian Happ hit two homers, pinch hitter Jon Jay drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh, and host Chicago beat St. Louis to complete a three-game sweep.

NATIONALS 11, ATHLETICS 10: Ryan Zimmerman hit a tiebreakin­g three-run homer in the eighth inning as Washington held on for a win at Oakland.

BLUEJAYS3,YANKEES2: Justin Smoak hit a tying two-run homer in the sixth, Josh Donaldson homered in the eighth, and Toronto rallied to beat visiting New York for a four-game split.

MARLINS 6, DIAMONDBAC­KS 5: A.J. Ellis hit a tiebreakin­g single in the seventh, lifting Miami over visiting Arizona for its seventh win in eight games.

RED SOX 7, ORIOLES 3: Andrew Benintendi hit two home runs and Chris Sale pitched six innings to earn his sixth straight win as Boston won at Baltimore for a split of the four-game series between AL East rivals.

BRAVES 13, REDS 8: Ender Inciarte tied his career high with five hits and drove in a career-high five runs, helping Atlanta win at Cincinnati.

PHILLIES 9, GIANTS 7: Maikel Franco hit a tiebreakin­g solo homer in the eighth, and Odubel Herrera also went deep as Philadelph­ia beat visiting San Francisco to earn its first series victory in six weeks.

ROCKIES 3, PADRES 1: Jeff Hoffman cruised through seven innings, Trevor Story had a pair of RBIs, and Colorado won at San Diego.

PIRATES 11, METS 1: David Freese drove in three runs, including an RBI single in the seventh inning, as Pittsburgh drubbed host New York.

TWINS3,ANGELS2: Video review overturned Ben Revere’s stolen base for the final out, and Minnesota won at Los Angeles behind Miguel Sano’s go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth.

INDIANS 8, ROYALS 0: Roberto Perez and Daniel Robertson helped Cleveland batter pitcher Eric Skoglund and win at Kansas City to avoid a three-game sweep.

MARINERS 7, RAYS 1: Ariel Miranda pitched a four-hitter for his first career complete game as Seattle beat visiting Tampa Bay to sweep the weekend series.

BREWERS 3, DODGERS 0: Zach Davies pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, and Milwaukee averted a threegame series sweep with a victory over visiting Los Angeles.
