MILDRED COWEN TATAR

1931-2017

-

Dedicated wife, loving mother, loyal friend and community leader, Mildred Cowen Tatar (Millie) died June 16, 2017, at age 85. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota on Dec. 21, 1931, she and her family later moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where she graduated from high school.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Millie met and married the love of her life, Jim Cowen. The newlyweds moved to Houston in 1956, where they raised their three children, Cari, James (Jimmy) and Jonathan. They were happily married 45 years, until Jim died in 2002. In 2006, she married Leonard Tatar, with whom she shared a passion for the ballet and opera and spending time with good friends.

Millie dedicated her entire adult life to caring for others. She served the community through many volunteer and professional roles. Before retiring in 2008, she served as Director of Development for Seven Acres Senior Care Services for 18 years.

Millie will be missed by her husband, Leonard Tatar, children Cari, Jonathan, Jim and his wife Kerry Silver, and stepsons Edmund Tatar and his wife Erin, and Bradley Tatar and his wife Jinsook Choi. Her legacy includes grandchildren Carly Cowen, Jacob Cowen, Liana Franklin, Natalie Tatar, Sydney Tatar, Yujin Tatar and Noam Tatar.

We are grateful for the compassionate care she received at Memorial Hermann Hospice.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 19 at 11:30 a.m. at Congregation Emanu El, 1500 Sunset Blvd., Houston, Texas, 77005.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Vita-Living, Inc. (3300 S Gessner Rd. #150, Houston, TX 77063) or Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services (6200 N Braeswood Blvd., Houston, TX 77074) would be appreciated.
