Dog days of summer? Hardly, here in Houston

- JENNY DIAL CREECH

If you are one of the millions glued to your Twitter feed all day every day to follow the insanity of NBA free agency or one of the many watching every Astros game to see if the best team in baseball can remain so, you’ve likely seen the opinions floating around.

This is a slow time for sports, they say. It’s boring, they write. “Ways to pass the time before football season” links pop up everywhere.

Football will be here soon enough.

Before long, fantasy teams will be drafted, tailgates will be underway and ongoing debates about the Texans quarterback situation will be at another level.

In the meantime, plenty is going on to satisfy the taste for sports. More than enough. This isn’t a slow time for sports.

It’s one of the most exciting times of the year, especially if you live in Houston.

Midway through the baseball season, we are legitimately talking about the Astros playing in the World Series.

These Astros are scary good. Even while battling several injury issues to some of their top players, they have remained the team to beat.

When October rolls around, they could be the team garnering the most headlines in town.

Right around that time, the Rockets will be in camp, gearing up for their 2017-18 campaign.

From what we know right now, they’ll be an exciting team to watch. With the additions of Chris Paul and P.J. Tucker (and possibly more to come), the Rockets aim to improve upon last year’s success.

They finished No. 3 in the Western Conference and reached the second round of the postseason.

Every day this month, there has been NBA news — trades, acquisitions, constant movement.

No shortage of entertainment there.

Add Wimbledon to the mix. And for good measure, Michael Phelps is racing a great white shark as part of Shark Week later this month.

July is a great month for sports.

There is intrigue to football season in this area.

The Texans will have one of the best defenses in the league. They have an exciting rookie quarterback in Deshaun Watson and a new starter in Tom Savage. Everyone is looking forward to seeing what transpires when the team takes the field. Will they be better? Can they make a playoff run?

UH has a new coach. Major Applewhite will be in the head coach’s seat for the first time.

The Cougars have been winning big games, the last few seasons and the expectations are high for the former UT quarterback extraordinaire.

Now, Applewhite and crew have to try to continue the H-Town Takeover with Tom Herman in Austin trying to turn things around for the Longhorns.

And Kevin Sumlin and the Texas A&M Aggies will take on the always insanely tough SEC when they start up.

It’s true football season will bring a lot to the table. But this part of the year leading up to the beginning of it is not just filler.

Baseball season in Houston is as good as it gets.

The Astros aren’t just winning. They are doing it with style. Their offense is constant excitement and every game is thrilling to watch.

Five Astros were picked for the All-Star Game taking place next week.

This team deserves attention for the next several months. In late November, we will be calling football the filler between baseball seasons.

The Rockets are building something special. And they aren’t done. More moves could come. If not for the Rockets, for other teams.

Seeing what is happening in the NBA across the board gives us a better idea of how the Rockets will fare this season.

Summer league in Las Vegas starts Friday for the Rockets and fans can get a glimpse of what is to come.

Houston sports in July have a lot to offer.

There’s no need to try to figure out how to fill time before football season starts. Look around. This is one of the greatest times of the year for sports.
