Bun B fires back

A fan called the rapper a Houston sports curse. He begged to differ.

Bun B has a message for Houston sports fans: “If y’all want to know what a real live hater looks like in Houston, Texas, just Google Dontralle.”

He’s talking about Dontralle Brown Reed, who started a petition on Change.org attempting to ban the Port Arthur rapper from Houston sporting events, because supposedly he’s a jinx.

First of all, Bun B — as one half of the legendary group UGK — is a hip hop legend and a gem for Port Arthur, Houston and the state.

Secondly, Reed’s petition — although it has gotten some attention on social media — has only 183 supporters. The petition also says Bun B is from “Port Author, Texas.” Bun is quite handy with the pen and the author of such golden rhymes as “Go read a book you illiterate son of a (expletive) and step up your vocab,” but they didn’t change the name of his hometown because of his writing skills.

“You’ve got to be careful about what you ask for, because now Dontrelle Brown Reed is known as a hater in Houston, Texas,” Bun B said when he called in to 97.9 The Box on Thursday morning.

Part of Reed’s “petition” says: “We have lost players, prime time games and shots at championships every time he’s involved — from appearances to his songs.”

The petition also claims that Bun B is a bandwagon fan, but we have several examples of him showing up to games when the home team is not doing well — particularly throwing out a first pitch when the 2014 Astros were 27 games out of first place.

“That’s amazing,” he said. “First of all, they’re wrong. You can do the math. You can go back and check the calendars. Any time I ever performed in front of a sports arena or did something where the team invited me out to be a part of it, they won. Every time I performed in front of the Rockets in Toyota Center, they won. Every time I performed in front of Dynamo at BBVA, they won. Any time I did anything with the Astros, throwing out the first pitch, performing, any of that. They won. This is basically trolling. This is the definition of trolling. So this is just somebody who basically wanted what he has now.”

Before the Astros played the Kansas City Royals in the 2015 American League Division Series, Bun B released an Astros-themed “Crush City” song. Of course, the Astros went on to lose that series, but they won the game when he performed the song outside the stadium.

In fact, there are plenty of examples of Houston sports teams doing well when Bun B performs.
