Lillie Deloris Bingham Stewart, mother, sister, aunt, mentor and educator, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, the 21st of August 2017. A native Houstonian, Lillie was born on the 28th of March 1929 to the late James and Lillie Mae Bingham.

After attending Houston public schools and graduating from Booker T. Washington in 1945, Lillie attended Dillard University on a Marion Anderson scholarshi­p where she was a lead soloist. She then matriculat­ed to Texas Southern University where she attained her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education, and Master’s Degree in Education and Administra­tion. During this same period, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporat­ed. Lillie D., as she was affectiona­tely called by her friends, married Andrew Stewart “Buster” and to this union were born three children-Andrew III, Denise and Lynelle.

After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, she inaugurate­d her lifelong career in education with Houston Independen­t School District. She empowered many students while teaching at Nat Q. Henderson, Robert Louis Stevenson, Dotson and Hartsfield Elementary. During her last assignment, “Buster” became ill and she retired to take care of him. After his death, she returned to her passion for teaching and she went to work at the Heights’ Learning center. She taught Adult Education, preparing many young adults to read and write in order to obtain G.E.D.s’ in preparatio­n to enter the work force.

Lillie was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Andrew E. Stewart Jr; all of her brothers - Maurice, John, Joseph, Gregg and Jim; her sisters- Carrie, Carol Jean, Jimsie, Willie Agnes, and Mary; and one niece-Anne E. Baxter.

She leaves to carry on her legacy, Rev. Andrew Stewart III, Denise Johnson and Lynelle Williams (Xavier); two sisters Irene E. Eaton and Rev. Minnie L. Baxter (James). Her grandsons Jason Johnson (Lekecha), Aaron Williams, and Andrew IV. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, great- nieces and nephews, extended and church family.

Services will be held Friday, August 25, 2017 at St. James UMC - 1217 Wilson. Viewing 9-10:45a.m. Funeral Services commence at 11:00 a.m. Interment- Houston National Cemetery (gate-time 2:00p.m.).
