Houston’s first event this weekend is Vibe& Ride to “For The Culture: Twerk Anthems” beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Third Ward Tours, 2301 Elgin St. Stops include Midtown Bagby Park amid sounds from artists Travis Porter, Ying Yang Twins, Big Freeda and others. Saturday’s riders gather at 11 a.m. for a ride through the Third Ward area, brunch at Live Oak Lounge and Grill, 2533 Southmore Blvd., then return to the starting point at Third Ward Tours. Houston Young Lawyers Foundation 5K Run/Walk on Saturday benefits HYLF’s grant program and Change Happens!, which offer a variety of local programs and services for youth developmen­t, substance abuse prevention and treatment, supportive services to the homeless, HIV prevention and assistance to families of uninsured children applying for health insurance services. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. in Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston and travels out and back along Allen Parkway. A post-race party in the park will have music, food, drinks and family fun. Yvett Karera (12-and-under girls) and Jacob Bell-Banks (14-and-under boys) earned trips to attend the U.S. Open Arthur Ashe Kids Day on Saturday in Flushing, N.Y. This year’s question asked: “In addition to tennis, education and life skills are extremely important to the developmen­t of our youth. Which one of the three components above is most important to you, and how will it help you throughout your life?” More than one-third of the entrants in this year’s National Essay Contest were from Texas.

Houstonian­s Harry Fowler and

Xavier Gonzalez won the men’s open doubles at the USTA National Men’s Open tournament at the Internatio­nal Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. The unseeded team knocked off the No. 2, 6 and 7 seeds on their march. In the men’s open singles, Fowler reached the semifinals, and Gonzales reached the round of 16.
