Offense stumbles in defeat to Tech
Coach Major Applewhite said the University of Houston struggled offensively with a “lack of consistency across the board” in Saturday’s 27-24 loss to Texas Tech.
Among the problems: four turnovers, dropped passes, missed assignments, third down-andlong situations and issues with the exchange on snaps.
“It was what you thought it was — a lack of inconsistency across the board,” Applewhite said Monday during his weekly news conference.
Several low snaps between center Will Noble and quarterback Kyle
Allen caused a disruption in timing of the offense.
“It’s the most important exchange in football,” Applewhite said. “It starts the entire play off. If we can’t get it off the launch pad the right way, it doesn’t matter what offense we are running. We are going to have difficulty in a shotgun offense.”
Allen, Postma vying for QB job
The quarterback competition between Kyle Allen and Kyle Postma will continue to be evaluated throughout the week as the Cougars prepare to play their American Athletic Conference opener Saturday at Temple.
Allen, who threw two interceptions and lost a fumble, was benched with 7:26 remaining in the game and the Cougars down 17. Postma led two late touchdown drives with Texas Tech playing a cover-2 man defense.
“The production at that position was not what it needed to be Saturday,” coach Major Applewhite said. Wide receiver D’Eriq
King, who returned after missing two games with a knee injury, will see an expanded role that includes plays at quarterback, Applewhite said.
