No. 1 pick Garrett set to make debut
CLEVELAND — Six months after being drafted, Myles Garrett can finally show why he was the No. 1 pick.
Garrett missed Cleveland’s first four games — all losses — with a high right-ankle sprain. But the 21-year-old rookie made it through a week of practice without any trouble, and he’ll make his regular-season debut Sunday for the Browns against the Jets.
The Browns need a jolt of any kind, and the 6-4, 275-pound former Texas A&M star defensive end might be just what Cleveland needs to shake off another slow start.
Panthers’ Newton issues apology
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton apologized Thursday night in a Twitter video post for sexist comments made to a female reporter.
On Wednesday, when Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked the 2015 NFL MVP about wide receiver Devin Funchess’ route running, Newton laughed and said, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. It’s funny.”
Titans’ Mariota a game-time call
Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s matchup against the Dolphins.
Mariota was listed as questionable after being limited in practice for the third consecutive day with a left hamstring injury suffered Sunday in a 57-14 loss to the Texans.
Smith, Breeland draw hefty fines
Baltimore linebacker Za’Darius Smith and Washington cornerback Bashaud Breeland have been fined $18,231 by the NFL for hits last weekend.
Smith was called for roughing the passer after hitting Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger in the Ravens’ loss to the Steelers.
Breeland made a horsecollar tackle of Kansas City running back Kareem Hunt in Washington’s loss on Monday.
Odds and ends
The Chiefs will be without center Mitch Morse (foot) and right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (knee) when they face the Texans on Sunday night. … Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (back) was limited for a second straight practice, and coach Jack Del Rio declined to say what, if any, role Carr will have against Baltimore. … Green Bay running back Ty Montgomery (broken ribs) is listed as doubtful to play at Dallas. … Jets running back Matt Forte (turf toe) and defensive lineman Kony Ealy (shoulder) will sit out against the Browns.
