A SIGH OF RELIEF

-

The Woodlands traveled to Lufkin for a District 12-6A game and was backed into a corner with a four-point halftime deficit. No worries. The Highlanders scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to wrap up a 45-21 victory.

Region II-6A is shaping up to be interesting once again. Klein Collins, Westfield and even The Woodlands, despite a loss to Katy, can make a case for being the region’s best team.

Terry outlasts rival in ‘Battle of the Berg’

Terry started fast against rival Lamar Consolidated, scoring the game’s first 20 points with just two first downs. Then, Lamar Consolidated came back to tie the game at 20.

Terry got a 65-yard touchdown run from De’Rondre Moore with 1:41 left to seal a 26-20 win in the “Battle of the Berg.”

The Rangers will take bragging rights and a 1-1 record into District 27-5A play.

Few anthem protests around state this week

Last week was headlined by the national anthem protests in the NFL trickling down to high schools. While not as widespread in Texas this week, it wasn’t absent.

Four players at Austin High School in Austin knelt during the national anthem before its game against McCallum.

Two Victory and Praise Christian Academy players — cousins Cedric Ingram-Lewis and Larry McCullough — demonstrated during the anthem last week, leading to coach Ronnie Mitchem immediately kicking the pair off the team.

McCullough took a knee while Ingram-Lewis raised a fist during the anthem. Victory and Praise is a church-based football program in Crosby for homeschooled students.

Elsewhere in Houston last week, nearly the entire Heights football team knelt during the national anthem ahead of its game against Sam Houston. Houston ISD already announced it would not punish or interfere with peaceful protests.

The Heights football team stood during the anthem this week before playing Bellaire.

Do-it-all Kuithe leads Cinco Ranch to win

Brant Kuithe’s 21 carries for 129 yards and five touchdowns were all Cinco Ranch needed to dispose of Foster in a 36-6 win Thursday at Legacy Stadium.

There’s not much the Rice commitment can’t do. He’s also the Cougars’ punter, turning in three punts for 125 yards and a 41.6-yard average.

Last year’s Class 6A Division II state semifinalists are rounding into form.

Yates-Wheatley to add new chapter to rivalry

Few rivalries are steeped in tradition like Yates-Wheatley.

The two meet Saturday at Barnett Stadium in a pivotal District 11-4A Division I game. Both teams are off to 1-0 starts in district and looking for separation in the standings.

That’s really the renewed wrinkle to this rivalry. Last season was the first time the teams shared a district in 11 years. The rivalry dates back to 1927. Another game of interest on Saturday’s schedule is Cypress Springs against Cypress Falls — two District 17-6A playoff hopefuls who have little room for error in the competitive district.
