Dr. Edward Lee Patten, age 68, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston. He was born January 16, 1949, in Third Ward Houston to Mrs. Jessie Lee Patten Key. He was a 1966 graduate of Jack Yates High School and went on to graduate from Texas Southern University followed by Baylor College of Medicine. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Madeline Riggs and they had three children Edward Lee Patten Jr., Erika Lynette Patten (deceased), and Erin Lynae Patten. Dr. Patten practiced general surgery, operated a physical therapy center and clinic, taught numerous courses at TSU’s School of Pharmacy and also, served as the campus physicians for its students. He was dedicated to enriching the lives of others and was respected and adored by all of his students, peers, family members and friends. Dr. Patten held multi-term leadership roles with The Rotary Club and Phi Beta Sigma Alumni Chapter. He received numerous awards for his service to the community most notably the first ever Lifetime Achievemen­t Award from Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Dr. Patten was a staunch supporter of the arts promoting various performanc­es at the Arena Theatre and helped to launch careers of local artists and designers. He was an avid reader of the encycloped­ia, spiritual texts and medical journals. His hobbies included mentoring young people, writing poetry and collecting art. Some of his favorite times included hosting block parties where he would BBQ for family and friends and watching his children pursue their dreams. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 -- viewing at 9am followed by mass at 11am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 3006 Rosedale St., Houston. Burial will follow at Paradise North Cemetery.
