Bullock may take on role of Davis in film
AUSTIN — Sandra Bullock will play former state Sen. Wendy Davis in a possible upcoming film called “Let Her Speak,” about Davis’ 13-hour filibuster to block the vote of an anti-abortion bill during the final hours of a 2013 special session of the Texas Legislature.
Bullock is attached to the script as long as it lands a director she likes, according to Deadline Hollywood, and the film will be produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch for Escape Artists, Jonathan Shukat for ShowKat Productions and Bullock.
Since Bullock’s role in the movie was reported, Texans have been chiming in on social media with suggestions to fill the roles of other Texas political figures.
Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith immediately suggested Mark Metcalf to play former Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who presided over the Texas Senate during Davis’ filibuster. Metcalf is best known for his role as a sadistic ROTC leader in “Animal House.”
Josh Brolin also was suggested as then-Gov. Rick Perry. Brolin has experience in political roles, playing former President George W. Bush in a 2008 film, “W.”
The Texas GOP Twitter also asked whether the movie would chronicle Davis’ ill-fated run for governor in which she lost to Greg Abbott in 2014 by 20 points.
The film would be a biopic of Davis’ life and her rise from a teen mom living in a trailer park to the eventual filibuster in 2013.
