Seahawks lose Sherman to torn Achilles
SEATTLE — In the grand scheme of what the Seattle Seahawks are trying to accomplish this season, a failed physical could end up becoming a huge benefit.
The Seahawks began taking inventory of their injury situation Friday, a day after a brutal 22-16 victory over Arizona kept Seattle on the heels of the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West at 6-3. It was a costly win after cornerback Richard Sherman was lost for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right leg.
After never missing a game in his career because of injury, Sherman will now be a spectator the rest of the way.
That’s where a failed physical suddenly becomes so important. Cornerback Jeremy Lane was supposed to be a member of the Texans at this point after being included in the trade where Seattle acquired left tackle Duane Brown. Except the trade had to be modified after Lane failed his physical with the Texans and returned to the Seahawks.
Jones’ objection not about Elliott
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said his objection to a contract extension for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is not because of star running back Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension over alleged domestic violence.
Jones said on his radio show that he wants all 32 owners to have a chance to approve the deal being negotiated between Goodell and the compensation committee that includes six owners. Jones is not on the committee.
The NFL has said owners already voted unanimously to extend Goodell’s contract and authorize the committee to work out the deal. Jones said circumstances have changed since that May vote, including the escalation of the protests over social injustice that have involved the national anthem.
Jones, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, didn’t dispute that he had threatened to sue the NFL if Goodell’s contract was extended. He suggested he was at odds with Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, the compensation committee chairman. Jones said he disagrees with Blank’s assertion that the compensation committee can complete the deal without another vote of all owners.
