Kubiak, Young headline new class

FormerTexa­nscoachGar­y Kubiak,formerMadi­sonHigh SchoolandT­exasquarte­rback Vince Young, and former and former Yates High School and Texas A&I running back JohnnyBail­eyareamong­nine men and women announced Tuesday as the latest inductees into the Texas Sports Hall ofFameinWa­co.

Also selected for induction on April 7, 2018, at the Waco Convention Center were Mary Hardin-Baylor football coach Pete Fredenburg, former Texas volleyball and basketball player and U.S. Olympic women’s basketball coach Nell Fortner, longtime Duncanvill­e girls basketball coach Cathy Self-Morgan, former Texas Tech athletic director and basketball coach Gerald Myers, former Texas Rangers infielder Michael Young, and two-time Olympic gold medalist and former University of Texas swimmer and coach Jill Sterkel.

Kubiak set a state high school record for career passing yards at St. Pius X in the late 1970s before playing at Texas A&M, where he was all-conference in 1982, and in the NFL with the Broncos. He was an assistant coach with the 49ers and Broncos before becoming head coach of the Texans from 2006 through 2013. He coached the Broncos in 201516, leading Denver to a victory in Super Bowl 50.

Vince Young, an all-state quarterbac­k at Madison in 2001, led Texas to the Bowl Championsh­ip Series title in 2005,accounting­for467yard­s in the Longhorns’ 41-38 win over USC. He was the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year with the Titans in 2006 and a two-timeProBow­lselection.

Bailey, a member of Yates’ 1985 Class 5A state championsh­ip team, was a threetime winner of the Harlon Hill Award as the outstandin­g player in NCAA Division II at Texas A&I, now Texas A&M-Kingsville, and played for three NFL teams. He died in 2010.

Fredenburg, a longtime assistant coach at Baylor, has been at Mary HardinBayl­or since 1998 and led the Crusaders to the 2016 NCAA Division III title. Fortner, who is now head coach at Auburn, played at Texas in the late 1970s and early 1980s, winning a national championsh­ip with the women’s volleyball team before beginning a coaching career that included stints in high school, the WNBA, college and USA Basketball with the 2000 Olympic gold medalists.

Self-Morgan coached eight girls basketball state championsh­ip teams, including three at Austin Westlake and five at Duncanvill­e, and was Duncanvill­e’s athletic director from 2010 through 2016. Myers played basketball at Texas Tech in the 1950s, coached the Red Raiders from 1970 through 1991 and was athletic director from 1997 through 2011.

Michael Young played 13 of his 14 major league seasons with the Rangers, twice leading the American League in hits, winning the 2005 American League batting championsh­ip and was MVP of the 2006 AllStar Game. Sterkel won two Olympic gold medals and four total, including a gold as part of the 1976 women’s 400-meter freestyle relay team, and coached the Texas women’s swimming and diving team from 1992 through 2007.

The nine honorees were selected from a group of finalists that also included former Cowboys quarterbac­k Tony Romo, former Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson and former Oilers linebacker Robert Brazile.
