UH falls short at Tulane

Cougars stumble after weather forces change in travel plan

NEW ORLEANS — Cameron Reynolds scored 22 points and made back-to-back 3-point jumpers to wrest back the lead, and Tulane made 10 free throws down the stretch to hold off the University of Houston 81-72 on Wednesday night.

UH had won five of its previous six games, falling only to then-No. 9 Wichita State on Jan. 4, and it had taken its biggest lead of the game, 52-49, on a Wes VanBeck 3-pointer. Reynolds sank two from distance in less than a minute to put the Green Wave (12-6, 3-3 American Athletic Conference) back in the lead 55-54 with 10:23 to play.

Rob Gray gave UH a onepoint lead twice more as the teams battled, but Ray Ona Embo made two free throws, and Caleb Daniels threw down a dunk as Tulane led 66-63 with four minutes left and never trailed again.

Gray scored 24 points, and Corey Davis Jr. added 15 to lead led the Cougars (14-4, 4-2), who arrived in New Orleans just four hours before tip-off after being forced to postpone a scheduled Tuesday flight until Wednesday because of icy conditions in the Houston area.

SMU 83, WICHITA ST. 78

Shake Milton scored a career-best 33 points, and the Mustangs upset the No. 7 Shockers in Wichita, Kan.

The Mustangs (13-6, 3-3 American Athletic Conference) snapped a three-game skid with their first victory since Dec. 31. It was their first road win against a top-10 team since Jan. 16, 1982 at No. 10 Houston.

TCU 96, IOWA ST. 73

Vladimir Brodziansk­y had 26 points, and the No. 24 Horned Frogs snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over the Cyclones in Fort Worth, with TCU playing for the first time without injured starting point guard Jaylen Fisher.

Alex Robinson, who started at point guard, had eight points and a school-record 17 assists for TCU (14-4, 2-4 Big 12).

Fisher is scheduled to have surgery Thursday, two days after injuring his right knee during practice.

VILLANOVA 88, GEORGETOWN 56

The top-ranked Wildcats led by as many as 44 points and gave Hoyas coach Patrick Ewing a rude welcome back to the schools’ rivalry, handing host Georgetown its worst loss in more than 40 years.

ALABAMA 76, AUBURN 71

John Petty scored 27 points, and the Crimson Tide defeated the No. 17 Tigers in Tuscaloosa, Ala, without leading scorer, Collin Sexton, who sat out with an abdominal injury.

CREIGHTON 80, SETON HALL 63

Marcus Foster scored 25 points, and the Bluejays never trailed in a win over the No. 19 Pirates in Omaha, Neb.

MISSOURI 59, TENNESSEE 55

Kevin Puryear had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and the Tigers beat the No. 21 Volunteers in Columbia, Mo.

SAM HOUSTON ST. 75 NORTHWESTE­RN ST. 52

Christophe­r Galbreath Jr. scored 17 points and grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds, and the Bearkats (11-8, 5-1 Southland Conference) posted their fifth straight win, beating the Demons in Huntsville.

SOUTHEASTE­RN LOUISIANA 85 HOUSTON BAPTIST 69

Jordan Capps scored a career-high 31 points, and the Lions pulled away from the Huskies in Hammond, La.

Ian DuBose lead Houston Baptist (4-15, 0-6 Southland Conference) with 17 points.

LAMAR 90, INCARNATE WORD 69

Colton Weisbrod scored 26 points, Nick Garth added a career-high tying 25, and Josh Nzeakor had a double-double to help Lamar (11-8, 3-3 Southland Conference) rout Incarnate Word (5-11, 0-6) in San Antonio and snap a three-game skid.

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 76 ABILENE CHRISTIAN 66

Kevon Harris put up 23 points, and the Lumberjack­s beat the Wildcats in Abilene to improve to 16-3 and 5-1 in the Southland Conference.
