Stick to your resolutions

- By Emilia Benton SENIOR LIVING CORRESPONDENT

With a new year comes a sense of hope and optimism, and the goal to better one’s self. In the later stages of their lives, many older adults seek to improve various health issues and luckily for them, their residential community programs are available to help them achieve them.

Treemont Retirement Community is one such example. Throughout its activity program, Treemont is helping its residents set New Year’s resolutions and providing the means to keep them. Treemont residents are provided a form on which to write down their resolutions and then throughout the month of January, various departments of Treemont will be available once a week to help the residents achieve their goals.

During the course of the month, Treemont residents will be able to see the improvements they have made and how their New Year’s resolutions have improved their life.

Their resolutions may be as simple as changing the address on their Texas identification card, while others may resolve to improve their hearing or vision, which may have declined over the years.

Diabetic residents may resolve to heal existing foot pain or maintain healthy feet with the help of a visiting podiatrist.

Those wishing to secure an uncertain future, should they suffer a stroke or heart attack, can accomplish that New Year’s resolution by working with Treemont’s Health Care Center on their desire to be rehabilitated and recover on the same campus they live on. “Treemont’s Senior Allegiance department offers in-house personal care providers who help the residents maintain an independent lifestyle for a longer period of time as compared to living at home alone,” said Aimee Dubuisson, activities director at Treemont Retirement Community. “With this independence, residents often see improved selfesteem and the maintained dignity their family members hope to see them achieve.” Parkway Place also aims to help its residents achieve their goals for the new year. This year, the community is planning a weekly Open House in the community’s wellness center every Tuesday morning to allow newer residents to tour the facility and hopefully find an activity that interests them. The center offers a variety of activities, from exercise classes to tai chi, chair volleyball, swimming, and water and chair aerobics classes. The wellness center also has equipment such as treadmills, stationary bicycles and weight machines for residents who prefer to work out on their own. “We encourage residents to stay motivated by trying classes at least a couple of times to see if they like it,” said Linda Fitzhugh, director of independent living at Parkway Place. “When new residents move in, we do try to reach out to them and meet with them to assess their abilities and interests.” For more information about Treemont, visit www. treemont.com.
