Arts can benefit those with dementia … and anyone aging

-

Exercise is key to keeping hearts and brains healthy. But new research has shown that engaging in the arts — including visual, performing, literary and culinary arts — may be just as beneficial. It’s the reason Amazing Place has placed an emphasis on using the arts in its unique dementia day program. Each day, one may find participants with mild to moderate dementia at Amazing Place engaging in painting classes, singing hymns or showtunes, dancing in a Zumba class, writing their memories in a creative writing class or learning how to cook a new healthy recipe.

What has been witnessed at Amazing Place, and is supported by research, is that the arts bring people out of isolation, giving them a sense of connection and enhancing their communication. For those who have difficulty speaking, it affords them another outlet of expression. The arts also allow them the chance to use a different side of their brain — the right, or creative side — that is often still functioning.

When participants are singing songs that bring back memories or sharing stories of their childhoods, it’s clear how the arts also taps deep emotions.

Since many with dementia lose some of their inhibitions, they are freer and less judgmental about trying new things. Research has also shown that participating in arts activities, increases dopamine, the “happiness hormone.”

Finally, the arts offer participants a sense of accomplishment and pride, supporting the need for a sense of purpose.

The many benefits of the arts in programs at Amazing Place for those with dementia are enhancing communication, social connection, sense of pride, cognitive stimulation and joy. But it’s worth noting, these are benefits for all of people to help them age well.
