League City officer kills carjack suspect
Dickinson man, 18, fatally shot during struggle, police say
A League City police officer shot and killed a man Tuesday who investigators say attempted a carjacking, fled and later attempted to disarm the officer on a neighborhood street.
At about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to an attempted carjacking at the CVS pharmacy in the 1200 block of East League City Parkway. Police found a woman who was injured.
The woman told police that she had pulled up to the CVS and got out of her car to go into the store, League City Police spokesman Kelly Williamson said.
The suspect, who was sitting on the curb, approached the victim and demanded her car keys, Williamson said.
When the woman refused, the suspect hit her on the head with a pipe. The woman ran inside the store, and the suspect fled on foot.
League City police put out a detailed description of the suspect, Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochessett said.
Trochessett’s office is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
A police officer encountered a man on foot who met the suspect’s description in the 1600 block of Laslina Lane, in a new section of Tuscan Lakes, Trochessett said.
When the officer attempted to speak with the unidentified man, the man attacked the officer, authorities said.
“The individual appeared to try to disarm (the officer),” Trochessett said.
The officer shot the man, who was identified Wednesday evening as 18-year-old Alvaro Herrera of Dickinson.
Trochessett said people working construction on nearby homes witnessed the shooting. Investigators were interviewing those witnesses.
Trochessett did not initially have information on how quickly police responded to the attempted robbery, or how much time transpired between the dispatch call and the shooting.
The officer, who was placed on routine administrative leave, was not immediately identified.
