HBU routs Incarnate Word to pick up first Southland win

Jalon Gates scored 23 points, and David Caraher and Braxton Bonds added 22 apiece as Houston Baptist defeated Incarnate Word 102-86 in a meeting of the Southland Conference’s winless teams Wednesday night at Sharp Gym.

Oliver Lynch-Daniels hit a 3-pointer with eight minutes left in the first half that gave HBU (5-16, 1-7) the lead for good. Incarnate Word battled as close as three points twice early in the second half before Caraher and Gates hit 3-pointers in a 10-3 run to hold off the Cardinals.

Charles Brown III led Incarnate Word (5-13, 0-8) with 22.

SAM HOUSTON ST. 75 SOUTHEASTE­RN LOUISIANA 65

Christophe­r Galbreath Jr. scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Bearkats won at Huntsville to knock the Lions out of a share of first place in the Southland Conference.

Southeaste­rn Louisiana (12-9, 6-2) was tied with Nicholls, which won Wednesday at Lamar, atop the Southland standings.

John Dewey III had 18 points for Sam Houston (12-9, 6-2). Marcus Harris added 13 points.

SOUTH CAROLINA 77, FLORIDA 72

Wesley Myers scored a season-high 22 points, Chris Silva added a double-double, and the visiting Gamecocks upset the No. 20 Gators.

Silva finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for South Carolina, which won the Elite Eight rematch from last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Gamecocks (13-7, 4-4 SEC) hit 11 of 21 shots from beyond the 3-point arc, matching their most 3s all season.

The Gators (14-6, 6-2) led by 11 in the first half and were up 4839 early in the second. But they had no answer for Myers outside and Silva down low.

Egor Koulechov and Jalen Hudson led Florida with 16 points apiece.

XAVIER 89, MARQUETTE 70

Point guard Quentin Goodin scored 13 of his team-high 15 points while the No. 8 Musketeers took control in the first half to rout the Golden Eagles and remain unbeaten at home.

Xavier surged ahead by 26 and was never threatened

Gary Clark had 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the No. 9 Bearkats extend the nation’s longest active home winning streak to 37.

AUBURN 91, MISSOURI 73

Jared Harper scored 21 points, and the visiting Tigers broke open a close game with a 20-2 run in the second half.

RHODE ISLAND 78, FORDHAM 58

Andre Berry scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, Jared Terrell had 17 points and six assists, and the No. 24 Rams cruised to victory at New York.

WEST VIRGINIA 82, TEXAS TECH 52

Katrina Pardee hit six 3-pointers and scored 23 points as the No. 20 Mountainee­rs rolled past the visiting Red Raiders.

Erin Degrate had 20 points for Texas Tech, which committed 30 turnovers.

TCU 68, KANSAS ST. 63

Amy Okonkwo scored 22 points, including the clinching layup with eight seconds left, and the No. 24 Horned Frogs celebrated their first appearance in the Top 25 in seven years by winning at Manhattan, Kan.

IOWA ST. 78, OKLAHOMA ST. 69

Bridget Carleton scored a career-high 39 points — the most by a Big 12 player this season — including 13 in the fourth quarter as the visiting Cyclones rallied to defeat the No. 19 Cowgirls.

Amanda Johnson scored 16 points to lead the Huskies to victory at San Antonio.
