WHAT TO WEAR
Mardi Gras is almost here, which means you need to plan your outfit.
Ahead of Galveston Island’s 107th Mardi Gras celebration and Fiesta Gras the Moody Gardens Convention Center is gearing up for a bluesy shindig of its own. Drumroll, please. This year’s 32nd annual Mardi Gras Ball for Special People salutes “All That Jazz.”
Sartorially speaking, partygoers should consider Prohibition-era references from the “Chicago” musical in addition to feathers and masks of the purple, gold and green variety. Think top hats (no tuxedo tails need apply) and multiple strands of beads (layered pearlnecklace-style) for an easy 1920s twist.
More than 2,700 people with disabilities, their caregivers and immediate family are expected to attend this weekend’s swinging festivities. Each special-needs participant may bring up to four guests for an afternoon of food, performers, face painters, crafts, dancing and more.
Plus, the early start date offers a major perk: first pickings on costume essentials.
Get a head start on the accessories front with a quick trip to Party City. For a limited time, most Mardi Gras gear is on sale, including items featured at right, which ring in at just $3 a pop.
Organizers promise a surplus of photobooth-ready props come Sunday, though Mardi Gras veterans know that an excess of adornment is the secret to letting the good times roll.
