Astros tap Verlander for opening day
Honor is 10th in righthander’s career; Keuchel sees own streak end at 3, expects a ‘JV gem’
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — After changing Astros history by propelling the franchise to its first World Series title in 56 seasons, Justin Verlander will lead the team’s pursuit of a repeat championship as the openingday starter this season.
Manager A.J. Hinch revealed his decision of Verlander over Dallas Keuchel during the television broadcast of the AstrosMarlins game Monday at Fitteam Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.
Verlander, 35, a six-time AllStar and the American League Most Valuable Player in 2011, enters his 14th season but his first full campaign with the Astros, who acquired him from the Tigers in a trade on Aug. 31 last year. He has a 3.46 ERA and 2,416 strikeouts in his career.
March 29 against the Rangers in Arlington will mark Verlander’s 10th opening-day start.
“It’s an honor, especially on this team, with guys that have the pedigrees that we have,” Verlander said.
In addition to Verlander, Keuchel and Gerrit Cole have started on opening day before.
“Pretty special to have that many guys on one staff,” Verlander said.
After Monday’s game, Hinch said he had informed the starters of his decision two weeks ago. He wanted to see Verlander and Keuchel pitch in spring training before making a public announcement.
“I mean, I guess I’ll let JV have opening day,” Keuchel joked, knowing Verlander was sitting nearby in the clubhouse. “No, the guy deserves it.”
“Thanks, Dallas!” Verlander
