CIRQUE DU SOLEIL ‘CORTEO’ PERFORMERS MODEL PANTONE’S COLOR OF THE YEAR

- amber.elliott@chron.com BY AMBER ELLIOTT

This is what happens when Cirque du Soleil picks out your clothes.

Move over, millennial pink. On second thought, just stand to the side, please.

According to the Pantone Color Institute annual Color of the Year report, there’s a new “it” hue in town: Ultra Violet.

And that’s not all, a hot new act dances into the Bayou City this week, as well. Cirque du Soleil “Corteo” makes a rather trendy splash thanks to costume designer Dominique Lemieux’s palette which incorporates sparkling blues, golds, fuchsia and pink into the show.

Each of the 51 performers coming to the Toyota Center this weekend have approximately four costume changes, with roughly half featuring a dash of purple or pink. The Italian work based on a clown’s funeral dream draws sartorial inspiration from the 19th century.

In case you’re wondering, “belles” Julie Dionne and Santé Fortunato say that “Corteo” audience members — even VIPs — dress formally for the occasion.

“Something that you’d wear to the ballet,” Dionne says. “Men in ties and women in dresses, but not ballgowns.”

To give off that “I’m with the band” (er, cirque) vibe, it’s a perfect opportunity to try out lilac, plum or bubblegum shades.

Just don’t wear green. “It’s considered bad luck within the circus,” Dionne says.

Pro tip: Greenery was the 2017 Color of Year, anyway.
