Blyuma M. Berliner, 91 passed away peacefully in her Houston home on March 7, 2018. Blyuma leaves her beloved daughter Ruth Buryakovsk­y, grandson Larry Buryakovsk­y, granddaugh­ter Maya Pomroy grandson-inlaw Matt Pomroy, greatgrand­daughters; Madelyn and Emma Pomroy and many treasured relatives and lifelong friends.

Born in Gurzuf, Crimea and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan, the daughter of Runya Levy Kab and Mikhail Kab, Blyuma earned her MD in 1949, shortly before the passing of her mother. Medicine was Blyuma’s passion, and she was a gifted Hematologi­st.

In 1953 Blyuma married her forever love, Moisey Berliner. They were inseparabl­e. Together they enjoyed traveling, attending performing arts events, hosting and entertaini­ng their countless friends and colleagues. Blyuma was known for her passion for cooking, baking and creating a spectacula­r table for her guests. No detail was ever overlooked. She did everything with grace, elegance and style. In 1955 her favorite and only daughter Ruth was born, and she maintained her position at the hospital while also being a devoted mother and wife.

In 1980, at the age of 53, Blyuma immigrated to the United States with her father, daughter, son-in-law and granddaugh­ter Maya. Her determinat­ion and perseveran­ce propelled her to learn English and continue her career in medicine, and she was the first in the family to gain employment.

In the latter part of her life, Blyuma adored and took great pride in being a Grandma, Great-Grandma and a loyal friend to many in Houston, New York and abroad. She relished the Houston arts scene and would never miss an opportunit­y to attend The Houston Ballet, Grand Opera and Symphony. Blyuma had a strong enduring Jewish faith, attending services on the High Holidays, and delighted in preparing Passover Seder. She received many accolades for her delicious matzo ball soup.

Blyuma is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Services will be held Friday, March 9th at 10:30 a.m. at Beth Yeshurun Cemetery 1037 N Post Oak Rd. Lunch will follow at Kenny & Ziggy’s to celebrate Blyuma’s life.
