Miss America: In 1983, Williams became the first African-American woman to win the crown. She later relinquished it when Penthouse magazine published nude photographs of her.
“The Right Stuff”: Williams released her first single in 1988, which became a top 10 R&B and No. 1 dance hit. “Save the Best for Last”: Her biggest hit, released in 1992, topped the charts and earned multiple Grammy nominations. “Kiss of the Spider Woman”: She earned raves in 1994 for stepping into the iconic Broadway role. “Colors of the Wind”: Williams scored a hit in 1995 with the thoughtful ballad from Disney film “Pocahontas,” which went on to win an Oscar. “Eraser”: The action film earned more than $200 million worldwide in 1996 and co-starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“Soul Food”: Williams led a strong ensemble in this 1997 comedy-drama about an African-American family that was a commercial and critical hit. “Dance With Me”: The 1998 film stands as one of Williams’ most vibrant performances. “A Diva’s Christmas Carol”: Williams took on the role of Ebony Scrooge in VH1’s 2000 musical update. “Into the Woods”: She earned a Tony nomination for her portrayal of the witch in the 2002 revival.
