Chase suspect faces 3 charges

-

A man whom law enforcement officers shot at after a high-speed chase will face three felony charges, according to the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office.

Several officers opened fire on the man, later identified as William Bernard Landers, who led police on a pursuit throughout Houston and crashed into several sheriff ’s office and civilian vehicles on Thursday night, Houston police said.

No injuries were reported in the gunfire, according to the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office.

Landers, 46, will face three felony charges of aggravated assault of a police officer with a deadly weapon and one felony charge of evading arrest, according to the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office.

Just after 7 p.m., an HCSO deputy made a routine traffic stop on the Eastex Freeway near Will Clayton Parkway.

The driver was found to have a felony warrant out for his arrest and fled the scene.

The pursuit spanned throughout Houston, ending at Hammerly Boulevard and Brittmoore Road in west Houston with the driver ramming an innocent person’s vehicle as well as several deputies’ vehicles, the sheriff ’s office stated.

As the driver rammed the law enforcement vehicles, two deputies and a Department of Public Safety trooper — who was assisting deputies in the chase — opened fire but did not strike the man.

The driver got out of his vehicle after crashing into a tree and yelled for deputies to shoot him, according to HCSO. Officers instead used a stun gun to subdue him and took him into custody.
