LARRY EARL VAUGHN

1947-2018

-

Larry Earl Vaughn, devoted husband, father, and grandfather passed away in Farmington, New Mexico on Tuesday, the 24th of April, 2018. He was 71 years of age. Larry was born to Earl and Wanda Vaughn on February 11, 1947 in Lubbock, Texas. He was a proud graduate of Coronado High School in Lubbock before earning his Bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in 1972. There, he met his future bride, Janet Wynes. Larry and Janet ran into each other several times at various social events, but truly connected over donuts and orange juice at a church event soon after Janet became a Christian. They were married on September 7, 1973 in Dallas, Texas. He later achieved his Master of Divinity degree from Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana.

The Lord and his family were the two great loves of his life. He also appreciated the beauty of God’s world, pursued every endeavor with passion and hard work, and was a master storyteller who made everyone around him joyful. Larry never knew a stranger and would often ask the person next to him if he knew Jesus. He firmly believed our hope in this life is a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

Larry was an entrepreneur from the beginning. Convinced they were destined to make their fortunes and change the world at an early age, Larry and his brother, Greg, started their first business selling random household items around the neighborhood when they were 7 and 8 years old. Larry and Greg also founded a cufflink company, Cuff and Clay, that took them all over the country and helped pay for college. Upon graduation, Larry worked as the Director of Sales with Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock, Texas for 9 years. He was an integral part of the design and placement of all Christian statues at the cemetery. He then worked for Aflac Insurance Company and Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company for 25 years. He blessed many by providing personalized care to his clients, ranging from teachers, to oilfield workers to residents of the Navajo Nation in Arizona. It was his joy to serve others.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Wanda Vaughn, and brothers, Rick Vaughn and Robert Stephen Vaughn. He is survived by his wife of over 44 years, Janet; his children, Emily Vaughn Carter and husband, Michael, of Southlake, Texas; Sarah Vaughn Shughart and husband, Brooks, of Houston, Texas; Bryan Vaughn of Houston, Texas; Tyler Vaughn and wife, Rachel, of Spring, Texas; and ten grandchildren, Rileigh and Cole (children of Emily and Michael), Anna, William, and Warren (children of Sarah and Brooks), Lillian and Alice Harper (children of Bryan), and Preston, Landon, and Levi (children of Tyler and Rachel). He is also survived by his brother and best friend, Greg Vaughn, of McKinney, Texas who is 18 months his junior. A night did not pass without the two discussing business, life and the Word of God.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 in afternoon on Friday, the 4th of May at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas where the Reverend Beth Case will officiate. Immediately following, all friends are invited to greet the family during a reception at daughter, Sarah Shughart’s home.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that you share pictures, stories and memories of Larry on the following website: http://larryvaughn.remembered.com.
