A logical choice

Trump foremost

Regarding “It’s funny how Trump supporters are not interested in our side” (Page A32, May 6), perhaps my thoughts will help enlighten columnist Leonard Pitts and others who have stereotyped supporters of President Trump into a convenient racial and demographic category.

I am Caucasian but didn’t vote for Donald Trump for president longing for the 1950s again. I voted for Trump based on his background not being part of the traditional political party machines generating the previous sitting presidents. I felt this was necessary to help address long-standing issues in this country including:

• Tax and regulation reform to help the United States become a more attractive country in which to locate manufacturing businesses and compete for global capital in the hopes that will generate more jobs for everyone over the coming decades — not just a few Wall Street fat cats.

• Border security and ultimate immigration reform including addressing undocumented immigrants — necessary for future growth.

• Entitlement reform to maintain existing programs amid slowing population growth and longer life expectancy without massive increases in taxation like with the socialist models of Europe.

• Repositioning U.S. foreign policy to address the trade disparity with China and promote strength against growing global influence from China and Russia.

The last several presidents, including Presidents Bush 43 and 41, President Clinton and President Obama, were beholden to their party platforms, generally used up their political capital on divisive issues during their first terms and rarely strayed from the party line for re-election purposes. My hope was that a Washington outsider wouldn’t follow in this same path and might have a chance at accomplishing more — despite his personal flaws.

If these ideas sound terribly divisive or if I sound like a scared, white, disaffected citizen longing for a simpler time, I beg to differ. Maybe there is some common ground to talk about?
