Suspect with knife grabbed by SWAT

-

A knife-wielding woman is in custody after hiding on a rooftop in an hours-long SWAT standoff Tuesday morning at a Near Northside apartment complex.

The violence broke out near Moody Park around 3 a.m. when police and deputy constables got a call about a disturbance. Arriving officers found a man covered in cuts and wounds, alleging his girlfriend had stabbed him repeatedly.

First responders rushed him to the hospital, and Precinct 6 deputy constables went to find the woman.

But when they got to her apartment in the 2900 block of Fulton, the woman refused to answer the door and barricaded herself inside, according to Houston police Capt. Larry Baimbridge.

Police burst into the apartment, but the woman fled out a window and hid on an upstairs awning. For four hours, police said, she refused to come down.

Finally, around 8:30 a.m., constable deputies called in a SWAT team.

Negotiators tried reasoning with her, but she was afraid to move until police went up and got her.

“We grabbed her and pulled her in through a window,” Baimbridge said.

The woman is expected to face aggravated assault charges, though authorities did not immediately release her name. Her boyfriend was treated at the hospital and quickly released.
