Flood mitigation effect

-

Regarding “State approves lowering lake levels” (Page A1, Monday), I welcome the state’s approval of lowering Lake Conroe water levels during high rain prone months. Having seen firsthand the devastation caused by opening the flood gates during Hurricane Harvey, where a disabled veteran’s home went from 16 inches of water to over nine feet in a matter of hours, the need to temporarily reduce lake levels is a positive mitigation step until more permanent solutions are implemented.

I find it extremely selfish and insensitive that many Lake Conroe residents put their boating desires ahead of human welfare. If they had owned a home in an area of River Plantation that flooded due to opening the flood gates, I’m sure they would change their tune. The questions I have are how many boat owners would be adversely affected by lowering the lake level by 2 feet, and could Harris and Montgomery counties afford the cost of dredging 1 or 2 feet at an affected owner’s dock so that everyone is satisfied?
